Reserve Opportunities

The Marine Corps Reserve offers several distinct categories and opportunities for service members:

  • Active Reserve (AR):
    1. Members serve on active duty while maintaining their status as reservists. This program allows for a full-time commitment to the Marine Corps while benefiting from reserve-specific support and opportunities for career advancement.

  • Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR):
    1. SMCR members serve as part of a reserve unit and participate in regular training, including monthly drills and annual training. This structure allows reservists to maintain readiness while balancing civilian life.

  • Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA):
    1. IMAs are reservists assigned to active-duty units to fill specific roles when required. This opportunity allows for training and experience in active-duty settings, enhancing both military and civilian skills.

  • Individual Ready Reserve (IRR):
    1. This category consists of Marines who are not in a unit but remain eligible for recall to active duty when needed. IRR members can maintain their military skills through training and participation in certain programs, while also pursuing civilian careers or education.

  • Active Duty Operational Support (ADOS):
    1. ADOS orders allow reservists to serve in active-duty roles to support specific missions or projects. This program provides valuable experience while contributing to the overall mission of the Marine Corps.

  • Mobilization Opportunities:
    1. Reservists may receive orders for mobilization in response to national emergencies or operational requirements. Mobilization can vary in duration and is critical for maintaining the readiness of the Total Force.

  • Reserve Counterpart Training (RCT): IRR Marines ONLY
    1. RCT provides reservists the opportunity to train alongside active-duty counterparts, enhancing skills and fostering cohesion within units. This training often focuses on specific operational needs.
