MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – The Nu’upia Ponds Wildlife Management Area of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, comprised of shoreline/beaches, ponds, wetlands, and native vegetated areas, provides sanctuary for several federally protected species. One of which, has expanded its colony since its early discovery in 1994 – the Wedge-tailed Shearwater. This has been possible due to collaborative and continuous environmental initiatives, habitat preservation/restoration and the species management.

Band of Brothers: Grantsville, Maryland Native Saves Fellow Service Member

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - It was a clear June night and Cpl. Ethan Merrill, a crash fire rescue firefighter stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, and native of Grantsville, Maryland, felt the wind in his face as he cruised down Kalanianaole Highway on his Kawasaki Ninja 636 motorcycle. Riding with friends, and fellow service members, was always a carefree adventure to him. Suddenly, tragedy struck. “One of my friends I was riding with went around a turn and hit the guardrail and flew down a 40-foot cliff,” said Merrill, recalling the incident. “My body will take over before my brain does. Every time we do drills or training, it helps me picture what could happen, and help be better prepared for it.”

Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Paepae o He’eia Nu’upia Ponds Wildlife Management Area First Community Workday

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH) co-hosted a first of its kind community workday, Oct. 7, 2023, to rehabilitate the ecosystem of the Nu’upia ponds wildlife management area (WMA) and enhance accessibility to important archaeological sites in the area. The workday was the first to occur under the terms of a May 2023 Nu’upia WMA co-stewardship Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MCBH and local nonprofit organization, Peapae o He’eia. The day saw 19 volunteers converge on the Nu’upia WMA to clean up the wetlands, ponds and beaches of the area.

Adjusting [Simulated] Fire: MCBH mortar simulator receives upgrade
Marine Corps Base Hawaii’s Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT) enables Marines across the installation to maintain skills and proficiency with a variety of weapons systems without firing live ammunition. The ISMT is an interactive audio/visual weapons simulator that provides basic and enhanced marksmanship training, weapons employment training, and tactical decision making for a variety of small arms and crew served weapons. Recently, mortarmen assigned to 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, 3d Marine Division, stationed at MCBH conducted training using the newly upgraded M252 81mm mortar ISMT.

Gabriela's journey from her hometown of Fresno, California to where she is now stands as a testament to her unwavering self-belief and relentless commitment to personal growth.
