MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII -- The championship game between 3rd Marine Regiment’s Wolf Pack and 3rd Radio Battalion kicked off Nov. 25, 2014, at Pop Warner Field where 3rd Radio took the trophy.
In the first quarter both teams were evenly matched as the two titans clashed for dominance.
Both teams made it within 25 yards of the opposing team’s end zone, but were never able to score a touchdown.
The crowd reflected the game’s energy with shouts ringing across the field from both sides, rooting for their team.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s two minutes on the clock and 0-0 on the scoreboard, we just try to grind it out,” said Kevin Suruki, a player and coach for 3rd Radio Bn.
In the second quarter, 3rd Radio had 20 yards to complete a touchdown. The Wolf Pack didn’t give up the touchdown easily. Although the Wolf Pack’s defense put up a good fight, the players couldn’t keep 3rd Radio out of their end zone bringing the score to 6-0. They went on to score a two-point conversion making the score 8-0.
After the touchdown, 3rd Radio continued to hammer the Wolf Pack’s offense forcing them to punt the ball.
“It was just us running up the middle that ultimately did it for us,” said Joe Reyna, a player and coach for 3rd Radio Bn.
The Wolf Pack punted a high ball and sprinted downfield. Just as 3rd Radio got a hand on the ball, the Wolf Pack rocked the punt returner and recovered the ball.
After a few plays for huge gain, the Wolf Pack found itself in 3rd Radio’s end zone with six points and an extra point on the way making the score 8-7 with 3rd Radio still in the lead.
The third quarter rolled along much like the first with no one quite able to get the upper hand.
Before long, the fourth quarter arrived. Unable to score a touchdown, the Wolf Pack settled for a field goal, leading the game with a score of 10-8.
With a lit fire under 3rd Radio, they rushed and rushed scoring a touchdown and bringing the score 14-10.
The Wolf Pack started hounding 3rd Radio’s offense, stopping them and taking the ball back. With only 1:30 on the clock the Wolf Pack tried forcing the plays and eventually threw an interception. Screams from the crowed echoed across the field as the game was brought to a close.
“It was a great game, down to the wire,” Suruki said. “3rd Regiment is a great team and played hard and clean.”
Two knees later, the game was over with a score of 14-10. The new intramural football league champion was 3rd Radio Bn.
