WAIMANALO, Hawaii -- The Makapuu Tide Pools are located on the lighthouse side of the Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail, which is part of the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline. The trail is off of Kalanianaole Highway in southeastern Oahu.
To reach the trail from the windward side of the island, follow Kalanianaole Highway past Makapuu Beach Park up toward Makapuu Head. The beach park is on the ocean side of the highway and parking is available.
Whale lookout signs are posted along the trail when it starts to level off and lead to the lighthouse.
My group and I could see the tide pools from the top of the trail. It may look like a long way, but it only takes 20 to 30 minutes. Arrows will guide you on your return.
The hike was very easy, and trekking down 500 feet of lava rock was fairly enjoyable.
The strong wind rolling off the ocean kept us cool and the migrating Humpback whales put on a great show for us on our way to and from the tide pools.
This endangered species is known to migrate to Hawaii between November and May, and are especially prevalent between January and March, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s website.
On several occasions the whales were breaching approximately a quarter of a mile away from us. We would be swimming in the tide pools and a whale would just breach out of the water. On the awesome rating, the tide pools went from entertaining to absolutely jaw dropping. It was an experience I know I won’t forget.
Besides the breaching whales, the tide pools also had a lot to offer. There are several pools that are deep enough to swim in. While swimming, I noticed colorful fish throughout the pools, which added to the natural/untouched feeling it possessed.
There were also a couple of blowholes sending mist straight up out of the ground. Strong waves travel through old lava tubes, pushing large amounts of water and air out of the ground to create the blowhole effect. As air passes through the lava tubes, sounding like I would imagine a giant or dragon taking a huge breath.
Once you leave and get back to the lighthouse trail, why not finish up at the lighthouse? The lighthouse is a short hike away with an awesome view and is a great way to finish the adventure.
Overall this was a great hike with a midway point that allowed you to cool off and enjoy a feel of authentic Hawaiian beauty. Depending on how long you want to swim and visit the tide pools, the whole trip could be finished in a couple hours.
