Pastor Kelekona Bishaw of Real Life Christian Center blesses the completed construction on Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay Feb. 15. The runway on Maj. Gen. Marion Eugene Carl Field reopened after two months of construction.

The $2.2 million project laid out 25,000 cubic yards of flexible concrete mix on the middle portion of the runway to absorb impact from aircraft landings. The newly-poured concrete will last approximately 70 years and reduce maintenance costs for MCAS.

“This is the second phase of concrete laid down,” said retired Marine Col. Michael "Swede" Olson, airfield manager, MCAS. “There were plenty of obstacles, from weather to the president visiting, but we completed the construction on time. All the people who helped with this project did it from their hearts and souls.”
