AIEA, Island of Oahu, Hawaii -- AIEA, Hawaii - The Marine Forces Pacific Band united its musical talents with those of the University of Hawaii's Marching Band prior to the University of Hawaii and University of Alabama football game at Aloha Stadium, Nov. 30.
Saturday's game was the first time this season that these talented Hawaii-based bands got together to entertain the public.
"Today was an exceptional day for me and my family," said Linda Peterson, the daughter of a World War II Marine veteran who traveled from Mobile, Ala., to attend the game.
"Not only did we get to enjoy a great football game but we also got to enjoy the music of the Marine band."
Even though the university's marching band was twice as big as the Marine Corps band and very proficient at their skill, it was the Marine Corps symphonic leathernecks that got the loudest ovation when marching on the field.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Alexander K. Gray, director of the band, lead the Marines and the university band in the playing of "God Bless America," "The Star Spangled Banner" and "Hawaii Pono'i."
Although, the day was special to all the Marines who performed during the pre-game ceremony, it may have been extra-special for the Marine trumpet player who sung "God Bless America."
"It was a privilege and an honor to have been given the opportunity to sing in front of thousands of fans," said Sgt. Daniel Cadra. "Also, it was a real exciting experience to perform in conjunction with the UH band."
The visiting University of Alabama football team took home a thrilling victory over the local Warriors 21-16, but they weren't the only winners on that sunny Saturday afternoon.
It was the local fans who got to watch an exciting game and who were grateful to listen to some of the best musicians on the island.
"The amount of cheering we heard from the crowd while marching on the field was unreal," said drummer Cpl. Joel R. Rubillo. "I hope we get the opportunity to perform for that kind of audience again. It was really something special."
