Journalists win awards, advance to Air Force contest

Journalists and photographers from a dozen units won awards in the 2006 Air Force Reserve Command Media Contest. As a result, their work qualified to advance to the Air Force competition in San Antonio, Texas, in February.

Named best command publication was the Midnight Express, 919th Special Operations Wing, Duke Field, Fla., which is representing the command in the newsletter format publication category. It was named the best newsletter in the Department of Defense the previous year.

Coming in second for best command publication and advancing to the Air Force contest is the Liberty Press, a magazine produced by the 512th Airlift Wing, Dover AFB, Del. Also competing in the Air Force contest is the Minuteman, 94th Airlift Wing, Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga. The tabloid newspaper received an honorable mention in the command publication competition.

AFRC officials announced the command's top publication and individual entries in an e-mail message to unit commanders Feb. 16. Twenty-five publications and 145 individual entries vied for awards in the command and the chance to compete in the service contest.

Tech. Sgt. Julie Briden-Garcia, 301st Fighter Wing, Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, Carswell Field, Texas, took the best stand-alone photograph for the second year in a row.

The 439th Airlift Wing, Westover ARB, Mass., had the most individual award winners. They are Staff Sgt. Paul Flipse in the news article category; Staff Sgt. Tom Ouellette in the sports article category; and Master Sgt. Stephen Ross in the contractor/stringer photographer category.

First-place finishers in the following individual categories also qualified to compete in the Air Force contest:

Category E, news article: first place - Sergeant Flipse, 439th AW, Westover ARB; second place - Sandra Henry, 919th SOW, Duke Field; and third place - Capt. Wayne Capps, 315th AW, Charleston AFB, S.C.

Category F, feature article: first place - Maj. David Kurle, 442nd Fighter Wing, Whiteman AFB, Mo.; second place - Tech. Sgt. Veronica Aceveda, 512th AW, Dover AFB; and third place - Ms. Henry, 919th SOW, Duke Field.

Category G, commentary: first place - Staff Sgt. Wendy Beauchaine, 446th AW, McChord AFB, Wash.; second place - Col. Michael Underkofler, 908th AW, Maxwell AFB, Ala.; and third place - Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey Walston, 917th Wing, Barksdale AFB, La.

Category H, sports article: first place - Sergeant Ouellette, 439th AW, Westover ARB; second place - Tech. Sgt. Tim Taylor, 302nd AW, Peterson AFB, Colo.; and third place - Staff Sgt. Denise Quasius, 440th AW, Gen Mitchell International Airport Air Reserve Station, Wis.

Category I, series (writing): first place - Tech. Sgt. Sherri Savant, 917th Wing, Barksdale AFB.

Category J, stand-alone photograph: first place - Sergeant Briden-Garcia, 301st FW, NAS JRB Fort Worth; second place - Staff Sgt. Susan Stout, 944th FW, Luke AFB, Ariz.; and third place - Master Sgt. William Huntington, 442nd FW, Whiteman AFB.

Category K, photojournalism: first place - Staff Sgt. Amaani Lyle, 459th Air Refueling Wing, Andrews AFB, Md.; second place - Senior Airman Jennie Chamberlin, 512th AW, Dover AFB; and third place - Sergeant Huntington, 442nd FW, Whiteman AFB.

Category L, art/graphics in support of a publication: first place - Jasmine DeNamur, 919th SOW, Duke Field; second place - Sergeant Huntington , 442nd FW, Whiteman AFB; and third place - James Branch, 94th AW, Dobbins ARB.

Category M, contribution by contractor/stringer (writer): first place - Maj. Jerome Cobb, 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick AFB, Fla.; second place - Master Sgt. Larry Stulz, 445th AW, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; and third place - Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Gregory Havrilak, 459th ARW, Andrews AFB.

Category N, contribution by contractor/stringer (photographer): Sergeant Ross, 439th AW, Westover ARB; second place - Don Peek, 94th AW, Dobbins ARB; and third place - Jason Minto, 512th AW, Dover AFB.

Category P, outstanding new writer: first place - Staff Sgt. Derrick Gildner, 302nd AW, Peterson AFB.

Category Q, print journalist of the year - Tech. Sgt. Charlie Miller, 445th AW, Wright-Patterson AFB; second place - Master Sgt. Tom Allocco, 439th AW, Westover ARB; and third place - Staff Sgt. Nicholas Przybyciel, 446th AW, McChord AFB.

A deployment publication in Southwest Asia edited and written by Air Force reservists also advanced to the Air Force contest. Maj. Ann Knabe, 440th AW, Gen. Mitchell IAP ARS; Sergeant Aceveda, 512th AW, Dover AFB; and Senior Airman Mark Robert Orders-Woempner, 434th ARW, Grissom ARB, Ind., all worked on the Desert Eagle during the mandatory contest issue.
