Col. James Bierman, commanding officer, 3rd Marine Regiment, commences the cake cutting ceremony during the regiment’s ball on the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Nov. 12, 2010. The infantry regiment, one of the U.S. military’s most deployed units in recent conflicts, celebrated the Marine Corps’ 235th birthday aboard the storied battleship as a beautiful sunset fell beyond the harbor. On Sept. 2, 1945, the Empire of Japan surrendered to Allied forces on the deck of the historic “Mighty Mo” to end World War II.
