Marines with Combined Anti-Armor Team Platoon, Weapons Company, 1/3, attempt to keep the villagers of Baraki away from their Humvee, Aug, 31, during a battalion field exercise at the Military Operations in Urban Terrain facility, at Schofield Barracks. In a deadly misunderstanding, the Marines opened fire on the non-hostile villagers, role-players from Combat Service Support Group 3, killing their town elders. A mistake that later caused a village riot. The Marines were conducting a cordon and search of the village with the intent on locating enemy weapons and insurgents when the mission went awry and innocent villagers were shot.
