MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – Joseph Bryan, the deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for Energy, and a Cleveland, Ohio, native, thanks Kahu Sherman Thompson, a Hawaiian minister, and a Honolulu native, after a blessing ceremony for the Wave Energy test Site near the French Battery bunker aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, July 26, 2016. Bryan oversees Department of the Navy policies on matters pertaining to operational and shore energy initiatives for the Secretary of the Navy. The area was blessed by a Hawaiian minister to protect the Wave Energy Conversion devices and the staff that work on them. The WEC devices harness the energy from the oceans waves, an abundant and renewable energy. The WEC devices near the base are currently in the prototype stage, but with more research and development can help provide electricity to impoverished coastal cities and military installations.
