Young Marines collect trash at Fort Hase Beach, Dec. 4, 2013. More than 20 Young Marines from units in Florida, Kentucky and Washington joined the Pyramid Rock Young Marines and active-duty Marines to clean the beach. Young Marine units annually travel to Hawaii to commemorate the anniversary of the Dec. 7 attacks by participating in a parade and wreath laying. This year they also participated in the basewide clean-up, Malama Ka Aina. Young Marine Sgt. Maj. Dakota Richter, the National Young Marine of the Year, from Florence, Ky., said the beach clean-up was the best form of community service and the group is grateful for the base’s hospitality. Young Marine Sgt. Maj. Storme DiGiovanni, 17, of Kailua, said the clean-up was a great opportunity for the Young Marines to come together for an activity, especially helping preserve the nature of Hawaii’s beaches.
