Ray Rippel, director of the unaccompanied personnel housing division, took this photo and used it in his new book which was released Oct. 29, 2015, at the Officer’s Club aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii. The avid photographer has traveled to many places: Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh, South Korea, Italy, Ireland, and Tokyo, but it was the lush green land and softly rippling beaches of the Mokapu Peninsula that attracted him the most. Race participant Petty Officer 3rd Class Jessica Treu crosses the finish line during the 12th annual Splash & Dash Biathlon aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Oct. 3, 2015. A joint effort by Marine Corps Community Services Hawaii and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37, the biathlon was the second to last race in the 2015 Commanding Officer’s Fitness Series. A portion of the net profits went to the squadron’s unit fund. Part of MCCS Hawaii’s mission is to contribute to the retention of Marines, Sailors and family members aboard MCB Hawaii by offering fitness programs and races such as the Splash & Dash Biathlon in garrison and deployed environments.
