MCAS New River makes airfield updates to enhance mission readiness and increase safety for Marines December 22, 2020 — To enhance mission capabilities and ensure the highest safety standards for mission readiness, Marine Corps Air Station New River is in the final stages of completing significant upgrades and renovations to its airfield. MCCS hosts a weekend of holiday festivities December 16, 2020 — U.S. Marines, sailors and families participated in a “Holiday Extravaganza” on Camp Foster, December 12-13. The event was open to service members and their families to enjoy a traditional holiday activity less than two weeks before Christmas Day. US Marines take aim for the 2020 Far East Intramural Matches December 14, 2020 — U.S. Marines across Okinawa gather to compete in the 2020 Far East Intramural Matches on Camp Hansen, December 7-18. Once a year, members from the Marine Corps Shooting Team travel to Okinawa to host the Marine Corps Marksmanship Competition Far East. However, due to COVID-19, the shooting team was unable to travel to Okinawa. Instead, Marine Corps Installations Pacific hosted the 2020 Far East Intramural Matches in its place. U.S. Navy, Marine Corps officers embark on Brazilian ship December 9, 2020 — Planners from U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South participated in a Brazilian Navy maritime engagement aboard the Brazilian Naval frigate Uniâo (F 45) off the northeast coast of Brazil, October 27 to November 5. The two U.S. officers are subject matter experts in amphibious operations, speak Portuguese and have significant experience in the region. United States Naval Hospital Okinawa distributes flu vaccines to thousands of service members and families December 8, 2020 — The United States Naval Hospital Okinawa has administered over 4,800 influenza vaccines to Marines, sailors and families within the last several weeks. In order to protect patients and staff from the COVID-19 virus, the USNHO is administering the influenza vaccine at a tent set up near the rear entrance of the hospital, which ensures appropriate social distancing and adequate airflow among individuals. NPS Researchers, Marines Explore the Trust Factor in Human-Machine Teaming December 7, 2020 — Trust in autonomous systems to do what they are designed to do, and meant to do, is paramount before these systems can be confidently employed as an operational capability. In an era of Great Power Competition, where those who can field autonomous capabilities the fastest will have a distinct advantage, researchers at the Naval Postgraduate School are exploring many of the fundamentals of autonomous systems, especially in the trust and confidence arena. On the eve of the COVID-19 pandemic, NPS researchers conducted a novel experiment with an autonomous robot in a simulated environment – with real Marines – seeking to understand just how confident the Marines were in the robot to complete its tasks in a combat environment... Seabees and Marines power III MEF and MCIPAC December 4, 2020 — Day in and day out U.S. Navy Seabees work to fulfill their motto “We build, we fight, we do”, training General Facility Marines in a joint-effort to help protect and maintain III Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Installation Pacific facilities. When a service ticket is issued on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, GF Marines shadow Seabees to learn their side of the job. Seabees are trained to build and maintain permanent structures while Marines are trained in expedient construction and maintenance.
