KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Tourists often say they visit Hawaii for its pleasant, sunny weather, beautiful ocean views and pristine, white sand beaches. However, although the ocean alone can make for a splendid weekend outdoors, many visitors and kamaaina alike are discovering that Oahu's only water park is an utterly delightful destination, and an exciting choice for the more audacious at heart. Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, sitting on 30 acres, showcases 18 intriguing water slides and eight fun-filled water complexes, including popular rides such as the Volcano Express, Typhoon and Shaka. Each ride is uniquely designed for different levels of enjoyment. Some provide wholesome family entertainment, others, pure thrills for daredevils. Other amenities include body board lessons, and party and picnic areas, one featuring a main stage where anyone can enjoy concerts, hula and luaus. With more than 1,000 people visiting the park on a daily basis, each day is extremely busy, said Jerry A. Pupillo, general manager. He added that Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park has been extremely successful in its first five years, but plans are already in progress for future rides. "We would like to add an Adventure golf course, a new night show and a mini-surf museum," he said. The park, an $18 million establishment, is the brainchild of one Disney employee, Jack Harrington. It initially opened May 28, 1999. Harrington's kids were water slide enthusiasts, said Pupillo. When the children played on slides in Maui, Harrington could tell they really enjoyed themselves and believed a water park would benefit both tourists and Oahu. His idea eventually blossomed into Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, Pupillo added. The park is celebrating its fifth year anniversary by offering discounted annual passes. The price of admission includes unlimited rides and free entry to other park attractions.
