Colonel DeTrinis is from New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his commission in August 2002 upon graduation from Delta State University before completing the Officer Basic Course and Infantry Officer Course in 2003. From 2003 to 2006, he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, serving as a Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer during two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 24th MEU and 22nd MEU.
Lieutenant DeTrinis joined Second Reconnaissance Battalion in 2006, deploying his platoon in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with First Reconnaissance Battalion in 2007. Following deployment, Captain DeTrinis assessed for the United States Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command, and joined First Marine Special Operations Battalion on Camp Pendleton, California.
From 2008 to 2011, Captain DeTrinis deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan, serving as Team Commander and Company Executive Officer. Following his second deployment, he joined the Marine Special Operations School on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. While at MSOS, Captain DeTrinis trained future Marine Raiders in ground combat skills and irregular warfare. Additionally, he helped develop and led the Team Commander and Team Chief Course.
In January 2014, Major DeTrinis joined 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines as the Operations Officer. During his time with the Warlords, he conducted Exercise Cold Response in Norway and deployed as the Operations Officer of the Ground Combat Element for Special Purpose MAGTF-Crisis Response Africa, and the Operations Officer and Executive Officer for Black Sea Rotational Force at MK Base, Romania.
In August 2015, Major DeTrinis reported to Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, for Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Warfighting, graduating in June 2017. From July 2017 until May 2020, he served at III Marine Expeditionary Force G-5 as a Regional Planner and as Plans Chief. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in August 2019, and he joined the School of Infantry-East as the Commanding Officer for Marine Combat Training Battalion in June 2020. He served in that capacity until attending the U.S. Naval War College's Advanced Strategist Program in August 2022.
In August 2023, he joined U.S. Indo-Pacific Command's Strategic Planning and Policy Directorate. He led the command's efforts in supporting the nation's most critical partner's Ministry of National Defense and Chief of the General Staff, advising them as they developed a new national defense plan and embarked on a complete transformation. He was promoted to his current rank in June 2024 and joined U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific as the G-35 Director in July 2025.
Colonel DeTrinis holds Master of Arts degrees in military studies and operational studies from Marine Corps University and a Master of Arts in strategic studies from the Naval War College.
He and his wife, Margaret, reside on MCBH with their eight children.
