EAST MEADOW, New York -- People flocked the railing, clapping and cheering as several helicopters kicked up dust and grass while landing on a field at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York, May 28, 2016.

The Marine and Navy helicopters landed for Military Day as part of Fleet Week New York. 

“It’s nice that they are introducing the civilian populace to what the service does,” said Richard Marshall, a local Navy veteran.

During the event, the public had the opportunity to learn about the explosive ordnance disposal equipment, the M-16 assault rifle and the M-240B machine gun, the different aircraft and the Marines and sailors themselves.

“It’s a big public relations event to let some of the people get around the aircraft and kind of explain what the Marine Corps does,” said Capt. Eric Scheibe, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit assistant air officer.

The U.S. Navy Parachute Team, or the Leap Frogs, kicked off the day with an aerial parachute demonstration, followed by a mine countermeasures demonstration from the U.S. Navy EOD Mobile Unit 11.

Later, Marines with the 24th MEU arrived on a CH-53 Super Stallion and an MV-22 Osprey to interact with the public and show off some of the weapons and equipment currently utilized by the Marine Corps. 

“Any questions we have, they answer them and let us know what our future could hold,” said Frank Cannon, a member of the Long Island Young Marines.

The Marines and sailors are visiting to interact with the public, demonstrate capabilities and teach the people of New York about America’s sea services.

“It’s been great; everyone has been very friendly and very supportive,” said Scheibe. “There are quite a bit more people at this event, but this one is definitely more community based.”

Fleet Week New York will continue with several more events throughout the city and the surrounding area through Monday, May 30.
